Colour: Mid crimson on the rim building to black at the core.
Nose: What’s in the glass is ripe and brooding with aromas of cherry, bramble, spice, oak and black olive, but with an underpinning of freshness thanks to the 2018 addition. The wine is pronounced, yet still has so much more to unlock aromatically over the coming years.
Palate: The wine itself hails from 100+ year old Shiraz from our (now former) site in McLaren Vale. 4 different vintages, all small volume, with the best barrels going into this. This is one seriously smooth, satisfying Aussie red. The fruit (think bramble, black cherry, blueberry plum and olive - all a fresh version of themselves) rolls and rolls, building as they go. There is a wonderful savoury element of tar and dark chocolate, too. The tannins have absorbed into the fruit yet poke through enough to keep the wine serious. Succulent, juicy and bloody long to boot - an Aussie classic.
Vineyard: Our former 120+ year old vineyard site in McLaren Vale - one of the finest in the region. Winemaking: For those who want to nerd out, Lucas (our talented winemaker) tells me you are tasting 30% new French oak, with the balance made up of roughly an even split of 2-4 year old American and French. The fresher 2018 portion spent 5 months in oak, 2017 - 17 months, 2016 - 29 months, 2015 - 41 months. Go figure!
