The 5OS Project 2018 Grenache
Colour: Medium ruby with purple hints. Nose: Medium nose of fresh strawberry jam, cranberry, cherry, citrus rind and fresh green herbs. Just the slightest hint of wet earth and charry oak at the back. A bit of tomato bush and black pepper as well. Somewhat subdued at the moment but still lovely. Palate: Upfront fruit greets you and travels down the middle of the palate. Dark fruits prevail but there are hints of the red fruitiness that makes Grenache so. Structurally tight right but showing signs of greatness, especially at this price. The tannins are tight and long - this will be excellent in the next 2-3 years.
Vineyard: This wine was created using fruit from the late LOOM vineyard, from the vines between 40-60yrs old that sit on sandy top soil into rich red clay. Winemaking: 2018 was a really good year for Mclaren Vale Grenache, this wine is made up of a variety of different ferments all from the same vineyard, some whole berry (for aromatics) some cold soaking (for structure and intensity). All ferments were given 2 x daily pump overs at the beginning of fermentation and 1 x pump over, 1 x plunge towards the end. Once dry pressed to tank to settle for 48 hrs before going into old neutral French oak for malo. Once MLF was completed we racked off gross lees and left to mature in barrel. (14.2%ABV)
